Chapter Seventeen

There certainly was work to do. First, they had to get the poor horse out of the heat. Grezkull was good with horses, and since he had access to the stable down at the inn, he volunteered to take the horse down there and see that it was fed and watered for today and tomorrow at least.

“I’ll be back soon,” he said, and unhitched the horse and led it off down the hill toward town.

The others set to work unloading. There was a lot of stuff. Alaria and Mia had gone a bit wild on their trip to town, and Alaria was happy to be able to spend some of the reward she’d been given for killing Dbuk. She had started out on their trip with plenty of money, mostly in the form of promissory notes on the Regent’s Bank in Crownheart. There was a money changer in Hopeford, and she’d changed a couple of the notes for gold and made all her purchases outright.

“You can’t be short of cash!” Sasha said bluntly as she looked at the stuff in the back of the cart. “And the rumor is that you bought this house outright! Is that true, Alaria?”

“Sasha!” Palo said, horrified at his partner’s directness.

“What?” Sasha said, glaring at Palo.

Alaria laughed. “Palo is shocked because most people don’t ask such straight questions about money,” she said. “But I guess you’re right. A small town like this, news gets around, and if I wanted to keep my wealth a secret I should have thought of that before I bought Number 4 in full with hard cash.”

“So it’s true, then? You bought the house outright?”

“Aye,” Alaria said. “The bounty on the monster I killed was big enough to allow me to buy and furnish a home. But it wasn’t much bigger than that. I’m doing okay, but I don’t have endless wealth. I’ve invested most of my money in this house and the furnishings. I've got enough to go on with, but I’ll need to make some money to keep myself going in the future.”

As they spoke, the friends unloaded the cart. Alaria used her tentacles for the heavier bits like the enormous bed frame, the sofa, and the wardrobe, but there were plenty of smaller items for the others to carry in too. They moved all the items into the downstairs hallway at the front of the house. On the left of the hallway was the kitchen, and to the right, a cozy living room. They moved the couch into the living room and put the rest of the stuff in the hall.

“What are you going to do to earn a living, then?” Palo asked, his shyness dispelled by Alaria’s frank answers to Sasha’s questions. “You’re not going to carry on adventuring, are you?”

“No, no,” Alaria said. “I’ll maybe do some small fights to keep my hand in, but nothing major. I want to open a little shop up here, selling potions and other crafted items—but mainly potions. I
